'Game of Thrones' Battle of Winterfell Spoiler Alert: Who Died and What's Next?

Watch out, “Game of Thrones” super fans! Episode 3 spoilers ahead!

When episode 2 of the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ left viewers itching for more, episode 3 swooped in and delivered the shocking and much-anticipated Battle of Winterfell, which resulted in the deaths of a few fighters, but saved some fan favorites. For starters, let’s dive in to who died:

The Night King

This one shocked viewers, considering how invincible he’s seemed throughout the show. The shocking death, at the hand of none other than Arya Stark, had Twitter totally fangirling over Ned Stark’s youngest daughter.

Arya's role in the Night King's death came as a shock to fans and even members of the cast when they first read the script. Maisie Williams revealed to "Entertainment Weekly," "It was so unbelievably exciting, but I immediately thought that everyone would hate it - that Arya doesn't deserve it." Kit Harington was also surprised, but eventually came around to the idea saying, "I like it. It gives Arya’s training a purpose to have an end goal. It’s much better how she does it the way she does it."

Melisandre

A surprising resurgence of The Red Witch unfortunately didn't end so well for her. Melisandre, whose immortality was powered by the red amulet around her neck, decided that her work with the fight was over, and entered the battlefield to remove her amulet, which resulted in her death.

Theon Greyjoy

This was a sad, but necessary death. Theon died in a valiant attempt to protect Bran Stark.

Lyanna Mormont

A sad death for “GoT” fans everywhere. Lyanna certainly packed a punch for such a small girl, but she didn’t go before slaying a massive zombie ice giant. Fans are praising her efforts while they mourn the loss.

Ser Jorah Mormont

In a typical moment of valor, Ser Jorah dies while protecting his love, Daenerys Targaryen, who shares a heartfelt moment with him during his final breaths.

Lord Beric Dondarrion

Having ironically found himself back on Arya’s good list after being a target of hers for a bit, Lord Beric fought the good fight alongside Arya and the Hound until he ultimately took one for the team in an effort to help keep Arya away from terminal danger. Fans couldn't help but notice the practicality of his flame sword amidst the too-dark battle scenes.

Edd Tollett

A former commander of the Night’s Watch, Dolorous Edd dies after saving Samwell Tarly.

Viserion

Revived as an ice dragon in season 7, Viserion met his demise when his creator, the Night King, was taken down by Arya.

Many Dothraki and Unsullied

The hordes of Dothraki and Unsullied fought hard on the front lines, but ended up meeting their demise pretty soon into the battle. It’s not lost on fans that many people responsible for Daenerys’s current standing became disposable by the Battle of Winterfell’s end.

Overall, reactions to the Battle of Winterfell ranged from absolutely shocked and heartbroken to "it was way too dark to see, HBO."

While the death toll continued to climb as the 82-minute battle went on, many fan favorites managed to get out alive. Although, there seems to be a consensus that Jon Snow and Daenerys didn’t really get their hands dirty as expected, swirling around above the battle on Daenerys’s trusty dragons.

While many "GoT" favorites continue to fight for their spot on the Iron Throne, fans know anything could happen in typical show fashion. So the heavy hitters have survived…for now. A preview for next week’s episode reveals the team’s plan to take down Cersei, with Daenerys saying at the end, “We’ll rip her out root and stem.”
