Jeff Koons' recent sculpture, 'Rabbit,' broke auction sales records by selling for $91 million - the most money spent on a work by a living artist.
Koons, who is responsible for his mesmerizing balloon art sculptures, has gained attention from his work by having his sculptures featured in museums, iconic locations, and auctions across the country, according to the Los Angeles Times. One of the most famous was his "Seated Ballerina" installation that appeared at Rockefeller Center in 2017.
Koons' now-viral art piece was sold at Christie's in New York on Wednesday. The "Rabbit" is made of stainless steel and stands at 41 inches tall. It's one of three in a series. One of the others is owned by the Broad Museum in LA while the third is a promised gift to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
This isn't the first time one of Koons' iconic balloon animal sculptures has broken this same auction record. Before breaking his current record, Koons sold another of his sculptures, "Balloon Dog (Orange)" for $58.4 million. He has since blown that record out of the water with his newest depiction of a rabbit eating a carrot. Buzz surrounded the sculpture long before it was sold, with bids expected to reach somewhere between $50 and $70 million. Christie's confirmed the final selling price of the item on Twitter Wednesday.
